Weekly Update

Valentine's Day is right around the corner and we will have a class celebration on Friday, February 14. In class, we will decorate gift bags to hold their valentines. You do not need to have your daughter make a box or bag at home! They need to make a card for each student and here is a list of our classmates

We had a nice, short week together. We have wrapped up our math unit and will review the skills before taking the assessment next week.

In social studies, we started our unit on the American Civil War. As we study this period, I am reading the girls another Ranger in Time book called A Long Road to Freedom. Earlier this year, we read another book from this series as we studied Westward Expansion. Because these novels come from the perspective of Ranger, a golden retriever, it helps to soften the severity of what happened during these times in history.

We are continuing to work on our ocean animal adaptations PBL project and we heard from a second guest expert this week. On Wednesday, we zoomed with Jill Ashley, who is a PhD student in marine biology at the University of Rhode Island. She was great and very informative!

January 29 is an unnumbered day due to Upper School Conferences and it is also a Gold/White spirit day. Lower School has planned a fun-filled day that includes a big/little sister activity, special treats, a rotation of activities in the gym, and a viewing of the movie Frozen by kindergarten to grade 4 students. Girls are welcome to come in gold/white colors without accessories, but be mindful of their attires so they can participate in all the activities that have been planned in the gym. They may wear jeans or sweatpants with their team color. Girls will have a chance to earn points for their respective teams. As a reminder, the girls need to wear sneakers to participate in the gym activities just as they do for PE days. January 29 should be a fun winter day!

Weekly Update

We had a great full week at school!

This week, we launched into our 4th grade PBL (project based learning) project. Before Christmas, the girls studied ocean animals, ocean zones, and animal adaptations. On Wednesday, we zoomed with our first guest expert, Lila Wood's aunt, Dr. Philips. She is a scientist who lives in Oregon and studies zebrafish. Next week, we will zoom with another guest expert. In the classroom, we are researching and making observations. We will complete this project towards the end of February.

Please mark your calendar for our PBL Culmination on Thursday, February 20, from 10:30 - 11:00. We will begin in the Lower School Assembly Room. We invite you to come and see what your daughter has learned!

In math, we are working through number and shape patterns and the girls are doing well with this. For their homework this week they completed a cumulative review that was a great opportunity to visit concepts we studied earlier in the year.

In reading, we started a novel called Flora and Ulysses. This story is about a little girl and a squirrel she encounters. Every 7 chapters, the girls respond to comprehension questions and use context clues to figure out certain vocabulary.

In today's Friday folder, there is a Scholastic Book Club flyer. If you would like to order somethingm the order is due by Monday, January 27. The link is here as well.
