Weekly Update

We are happy to announce that the Fourthies will head to Kings Dominion on Friday, May 9. This is a joint field trip with the 4th-grade boys from St. Christopher's. The field trip is science-themed and focuses on the science of roller coasters. All of the trip details are here. Please note that there is a form to complete on the field trip form about your daughter's lunch preference that day. We would appreciate having the form completed by Friday, April 4

In math, we finished the first chunk of fraction lessons, and the girls completed a quiz on Wednesday. They did so well! We are now studying mixed numbers and improper fractions. I am proud of how they are staying focused and working hard! For Wordly Wise, we are moving a bit quicker through the lessons to ensure we complete most of the lists in the workbook. Today, we started a fun writing project where the girls interviewed a Fourthie from another class. We emphasized the importance of asking big questions to go a bit deeper into our understanding of one another. Next week, the girls will write about their friend they interviewed and also create a magazine coverQ

We will be busy much of next week rehearsing for our musical. In between our practices, we will continue to keep the lamps of learning burning!

Weekly Update

We had a great week back from spring break and we are enjoying this nice weather!

In math, the girls have loved learning and practicing the order of operations using the acronym PEMDAS. I love their enthusiasm and interest in this skill! While practicing this, we also started our unit on fractions. We learned how to decompose fractions and add fractions with like denominators. For our assessments in this chapter, we are going to have small quizzes scattered throughout instead of one big test at the end.

In reading, we began our next novel, Number the Stars. We learned a little bit about WWII and Denmark to prepare our minds for the setting of the novel. We also began a "mythological creature" bracket for our own version of March Madness. The girls had to choose criteria to judge the creatures and move them through the brackets. They are reading about various creatures and explaining their thoughts as they advance creatures through their bracket. For honoring Women's History Month, the girls read an article about a woman, created an illustration representing her, and surrounded the illustration with facts.

For social studies, we are continuing to read Ranger in Time: Long Road to Freedom, which really focuses on the Underground Railroad as we read about the characters Sarah and Jesse escaping enslavement. When we finish this novel, we will continue to study different aspects of the Civil War.

Happy Spring Break!

Our second Wordly Wise Dress Day was another success. Their creativity and cleverness astound me!

This week, the girls took the chapter 5 test on geometry, and this will come home after the break. We did go over it today in class. We also discussed order of operations and used the acronym PEMDAS to help remember the important order. They loved these problems and showed much enthusiasm! We will work on this a bit more after break and then jump into our chapter on fractions.

Exciting news:  Children's book illustrator Angeli Rafer is visiting the Lower School on Friday, March 28! She will be speaking to the Fourthies from 9:30 - 10:30 in the library. I wish you and your family a relaxing and refreshing break! I look forward to seeing the girls when we return.
