In math, the girls have loved learning and practicing the order of operations using the acronym PEMDAS. I love their enthusiasm and interest in this skill! While practicing this, we also started our unit on fractions. We learned how to decompose fractions and add fractions with like denominators. For our assessments in this chapter, we are going to have small quizzes scattered throughout instead of one big test at the end.
In reading, we began our next novel, Number the Stars. We learned a little bit about WWII and Denmark to prepare our minds for the setting of the novel. We also began a "mythological creature" bracket for our own version of March Madness. The girls had to choose criteria to judge the creatures and move them through the brackets. They are reading about various creatures and explaining their thoughts as they advance creatures through their bracket. For honoring Women's History Month, the girls read an article about a woman, created an illustration representing her, and surrounded the illustration with facts.
For social studies, we are continuing to read Ranger in Time: Long Road to Freedom, which really focuses on the Underground Railroad as we read about the characters Sarah and Jesse escaping enslavement. When we finish this novel, we will continue to study different aspects of the Civil War.
